Leafall

(On 20 October 2016, a small leaf was stuck to my clothes and came on to my table just before a lecture at DAMTP. This is a small poem on a leaf. A leaf, for me, symbolizes a basic and yet a highly complex and beautiful unit of life, a pulsating entity with elaborate conduits for elements that support the existence of the leaf. A leaf, for me, is a lamina that lets through the luminosity and a Leafall, a not-so-required portmanteau of Leaf Fall, is a moment of transition from palpitating life to a descent into the abyss of non-existence. Hope you enjoy the poem!)

Like rivulets of life,

veins on a leaf

…………… meander

…………………… through the jade:

emergent on green,

never shall fade

……… the throb and thrust of life,

………………………………………….borne,

even when the chlorophyll is all but gone;

Leafall: in winters, cold,

……………… a little greenstone, bold,

went against the breeze,

……………….flew, and fell, and did freeze;

quakes and tremors on the soil

……………….could all but mimic the toil

of the labyrinthine sinews in the green

in carrying the riverwaters*… Oh! So pristine!

Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar

* riverwaters here signify the life-force in the leaf, so to say.
